George Clooney’s Two Marriages: From a Short-Lived First Union to His Lasting Love with Amal
George Clooney, long regarded as one of Hollywood’s most eligible bachelors, once vowed never to marry again after the end of his first marriage. However, years later he found love a second time in a relationship that continues to captivate the public.

Clooney’s first marriage was to actress Talia Balsam. The couple met in 1984 while working on a local play and eventually married. The marriage lasted only three years and ended in divorce in 1992. Clooney later admitted he was not ready for marriage at that time, stating, “I probably—definitely—wasn’t someone who should have been married at that point.”

Following the divorce, Clooney publicly declared he would never walk down the aisle again. Yet, fate intervened when he met British-Lebanese human rights lawyer Amal Alamuddin (now Amal Clooney) through a mutual friend.
An Unexpected Meeting and a Memorable Proposal
The couple’s first encounter took place at Clooney’s home near Lake Como in Italy. Amal was visiting with a friend when Clooney’s agent, Bryan Lourd, called to tell him that the woman he would marry was coming to his house. Clooney initially dismissed the comment as a joke.

Their meeting coincided with a visit from Clooney’s parents, and the pair stayed up all night talking. After Amal sent him photos from the visit, they began corresponding by email. Weeks later, Clooney traveled to London and invited Amal to Abbey Road Studios for a movie scoring session.
The proposal on April 28, 2014, did not go as planned. After six months of dating, Clooney prepared a romantic dinner with music from his aunt Rosemary Clooney. He placed the engagement ring in a box with a lighter and asked Amal to light some candles he had blown out. When she discovered the ring, she was confused, initially thinking it belonged to someone else. Clooney later described the moment as “a disaster,” recalling that it took Amal approximately 25 minutes to respond while he remained on one knee. He finally said, “Listen, I really would like to marry you, but I also am not young and I’ve been on my knee now. And I could like lose a hip.” Amal eventually replied, “Oh, yes.”
The couple married in a civil ceremony in Venice in September 2014.

George Clooney’s First Wife – Talia Balsam
Talia Balsam began her acting career in the late 1970s. She and Clooney met in 1984 and later reunited before marrying. Following their divorce, Balsam married actor John Slattery in December 1998. The couple has a son named Harry and has worked together on the series Mad Men, where they portrayed husband and wife. Slattery has credited their successful marriage to maintaining independence and shared interests.

Today, George and Amal Clooney’s relationship remains strong. In June 2017, they welcomed twins, Ella and Alexander. Clooney has frequently expressed how fortunate he feels to have found Amal, describing her as the person he was always meant to be with.
Both women have played significant roles in Clooney’s life, each contributing to the man he has become.
