Florida, Ron DeSantis Bans Social Networks for Children Under 14 years old

The law mainly concerns platforms that involve monitoring user activity for advertising purposes or that influence the algorithm of visible content on these platforms.

Yesterday, Ron DeSantis, the governor of Florida, signed a law prohibiting minors under the age of 14 from creating a profile on online social platforms. The law also requires parental consent for children between the ages of 14 and 15. This is a partial amendment to the previous bill that would have banned usage for minors under the age of 16.

What the law entails:

The law primarily targets platforms that monitor user activity for advertising purposes or influence the algorithm of visible content on these platforms. It also prohibits platforms that allow the uploading or viewing of content posted by other users. However, email, video games, messaging, multimedia content streaming, news, and online shopping can still be used without restrictions.
