Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt takes maternity leave as President Trump makes a decision on her role

A transition is taking shape inside the White House press operation as Karoline Leavitt prepares to step away from daily briefing duties ahead of the birth of her second child.

During a recent press appearance, Leavitt indicated her departure from the podium is imminent, telling reporters it would “likely” be her “last gaggle” for now. “As you can see, I’m about ready to have a baby any minute, so I’ll see you guys very soon,” she said, signaling that her leave could begin at any time.

Rotating Officials to Handle Briefings

Rather than appointing a single interim press secretary, the White House plans to distribute briefing responsibilities among multiple senior officials. According to reporting from NewsNation, this rotating approach could include appearances by Donald Trump, JD Vance, and other members of the administration.

The arrangement marks a departure from the traditional model in which one spokesperson leads daily briefings. Under this structure, the president himself may take a more direct role in addressing the press from the podium.

Oversight of the broader communications strategy will remain with Steven Cheung, who is expected to manage messaging operations during Leavitt’s absence.

Personal Milestones Within the Administration

Leavitt, who publicly announced her pregnancy in December alongside her husband Nicholas Riccio, described the upcoming arrival as “the greatest Christmas gift we could ever ask for – a baby girl coming in May 2026.” She is expected to return to her role following maternity leave.

Her tenure has already been notable, as she became the youngest individual appointed White House press secretary at age 28 in November 2024.

At the same time, another high-profile family within the administration is also preparing for a new addition. Usha Vance and her husband JD Vance recently confirmed they are expecting their fourth child, a boy.

Usha Vance was seen attending the 113th First Lady’s Luncheon hosted by Melania Trump, where she appeared publicly with her pregnancy and received a baby gift during the event.

As Leavitt prepares to step back temporarily, the White House is moving toward a more flexible communications structure, relying on a range of senior voices to maintain its daily engagement with the press.
